Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2012

Marqués de Murrieta is a historic winery founded in 1852. The grapes originate from the La Plana vineyard, located within the historic Ygay estate in the Rioja Alta subzone. The vines are situated approximately 500 meters above sea level, with their roots extending deep into clay-limestone soil. These pedoclimatic conditions ensure a natural concentration of aromas and optimal tannin definition. Marqués de Murrieta interprets the terroir through a red wine with a strong identity—one that combines energy and refinement in a single sip, while possessing remarkable aging potential.

The Tempranillo and Mazuelo grapes are harvested separately. Following destemming and crushing, the must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with daily pump-overs. The wines are then aged in separate vessels: the Tempranillo in American oak barrels, and the Mazuelo in French oak barrels. These stages are followed by blending and an extended final maturation period. This rigorous production process results in a harmonious and exceptionally complex wine.

The 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is an icon of Rioja.
Born from the old vines of the La Plana vineyard, this wine masterfully blends the Tempranillo and Mazuelo varieties. Aged for 34 months in oak barrels and further refined in the bottle, this wine stands out for its silky tannins and vibrant freshness.
